Camping Fun!

I have to say that The Little Write Gal and I had a fun time at camp and believe it or not I survived with no broken nails!  We stayed in a cabin in the woods with 12 other girls. I have many bug bites to prove it.  I took bug spray but seeing as how I am practically mosquito bait the bug spray didn’t work very well.

One of our “fun” camping activities was dissecting owl pellets.  What is an owl pellet you ask?  Don’t worry I had never heard of one either.   The Little Write Gal knew all about them and quickly gave Mommy a science lesson.  Owls, like many other birds, eat their food whole. Since birds do not have teeth, they can’t chew their food. They use their beaks to rip their prey apart and then swallow large chunks whole. The owl slowly digests its meal by separating the softer materials (such as meat) from the harder material (such as bones). It then regurgitates the harder material along with indigestible items such as feathers and fur in the form of a pellet.

Here is a picture of The Little Write Gal holding her owl pellet. After dissecting we determined our owl had eaten a rat.

Here she is holding the rat bones which we put in a CD case. I have tried several times to throw these way but The Little Write Gal wants to keep them as a souvenir.

We had a great time learning camp songs, praying, and participating in Bible studies and activities.  One night all of the Moms in our group went out of the room while they covered up the campers with sheets except for their feet.  When we came back into the room we had to guess which feet belonged to our daughter. I would know those little twinkle toes anywhere.  The campers did the same thing.  The Little Write Gal guessed mine right away too.  She said she knew I really loved her because I was “SO not camp material.”  I adore her which is why I wanted to make this a memorable trip we will both never forget!

Off to camp I go

cabin

If you have ever read my blog even one time, you can probably guess that I am NOT a camper. As a matter of fact I have never been camping in my entire life and have never wanted to do so.  I typically stray from doing anything that might facilitate the breaking of a nail.  :D   I am not a fan of the outdoors because I burn when I get in the sun and I don’t like to sweat.  I put on full makeup before going to the grocery store and am a typical “girly-girl” for sure.

Whenever you have a child everything changes and it becomes less about you and all about what they want.  The Little Write Gal wants to go to camp. On Monday we are leaving for a special Mother/Daughter camp in the mountains.  She is so excited!  I am excited for her I just hope I can survive.  At least we will not be camping in the outdoors, we will be inside an air conditioned cabin.  YAY!  Above is a picture of one of the cabins that was posted on the camp Web site.  Not only will we be rooming with a bunch of people we don’t know, we have to share a bathroom.  Gross!  I am definitely bringing some flip flops for the shower which I will promptly be throwing away in the  trash as soon as we arrive home.

I am taking my Blackberry with me and I “hope” to be able to post some camp stories if my Internet connection works while I am away.  If you could use a laugh be sure and check back next week for our hilarious antics!  I may just have to vlog it although you will have to wait to see that until I get back home.  Sunscreen – check; Bug spray – check; Flip flops – check; Valium – check!

Have a great week everyone!

Missing my Dad this Father’s Day

dad1small

This is my favorite photo of me and my Dad.  This Father’s Day is especially sad for me because it is my very first one without him. As you may remember, he died in January from complications from leukemia at age 66. I imagine every “first”  holiday after you lose someone is difficult, and I can only hope that it gets better over time.   I was supposed to lead the Children’s Sermon at church this Sunday, but I asked someone else to fill in for me.  I am not sure I can get up in front of the church without crying.  I know that I probably should be “moving on” but honestly his death has been extremely difficult for me to handle.  There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about him or wish that he was still with us.  I know that he is in heaven and  does not have to suffer any more but the “Daddy’s Girl” in me still wants him with me. I would give anything if he could just call me one more time on my cell phone and call me “Critty” or “Green Beans” which were the nicknames he used to call me.  The “Green Beans” nickname came from when I was a baby and used to love to eat green beans (I still do).

I remember how my Dad cried on my wedding day, and when I told him that I was naming my daughter after his mother.  In addition to loving his grandchildren he also loved his granddogs, Ashes and Maddie.  When Ashes was 3 months old and broke his leg, my Dad rode with me all of the way to the 24 hour animal trauma hospital gently cradling the then 6 pound dog in his lap.  We both cried the whole way there and most of the way home.  That’s how my Dad was, very caring and sensitive.

If you are reading this post and your Dad is still with you, please take some time this Father’s Day and tell him how much he means to you.  Time goes by so fast and only God knows how much time we have left on this Earth.  I never thought my Dad would die while I was only in my 30s and my daughter wasn’t even out of elementary school yet.   I am sure anyone who has ever lost a loved one knows exactly how I feel. Life is too short.

Happy Father’s Day.  I love you Daddy!

Twisted Silver Review and Giveaway (CLOSED)

twistedsilver2Recently I introduced my readers to the fabulous and funky jewelry from Twisted Silver.  I was thrilled to be able to review two of their bracelets, the Aurora and the XO.  The Aurora bracelet is individually fire treated with fascinating aurora borealis color.  I was immediately drawn to the weight of this piece and how substantial it feels.  I really love chunky jewelry and if you do too you will not be disappointed because this is a definite statement piece.  It is 8″ in length and is adjustable to fit a smaller wrist. I haven’t even gotten to wear this one yet because as soon as my daughter saw it she put it on her wrist and has been wearing it ever since.

twistedsilver3The XO brass bracelet is made from gorgeous brass and is adjustable to fit a 7″ wrist.  This description says it all from the Twisted Silver Web site: The asymmetrical yet balanced design artistically draws double-takes with an edgy, urban feel. We’re talkin city chic. This is one of those designs that can rock denim as it can silk.  I could not have said it better myself.  What drew me to this piece is the XO design which will look great with any outfit.  It has an unusual quality about it which I love.

I am happy to say that the very generous designers at Twisted Silver are giving away a bracelet to one lucky Write Gal reader.  The winner will be able to choose either the XO bracelet or the Aurora — whichever you prefer!  Let me tell you it is a tough decision because both are equally gorgeous.  Here’s how to enter:

Budget Cuts Will Compromise Education

budgetcutsI normally do not talk about politics on my blog, but I feel very strongly about this issue and want to share it with my readers. State governments across the United States are slashing their budgets in a wide variety of areas, including Education. This is certainly true in my home state of North Carolina, which is taking its Education budget cuts too far in my opinion.  Currently North Carolina public schools are facing more than $1 billion in budget cuts.  The proposed cuts are going to impact class size and likely could cause some schools to shut their doors.  “When North Carolina had tough choices to make during the Depression, political leaders stepped forward and made a very courageous decision to raise taxes and keep public schools strong. What is missing at the moment is that kind of political courage. We are not going to cut our way out of this recession. As our president said in his inauguration speech, ‘the countries that out educate us today will out compete us tomorrow,’” said Debra Horton, the president of the North Carolina Parent Teachers’ Association, in a press release from the NC Association of Educators.

While no one has yet to come up with a “fix,” it is clear that unless something is done, North Carolina is going to feel the budget impact on multiple levels.  If the budget is slashed as planned, it is estimated that nearly 12,000 North Carolina educators would be added to our state’s already staggering number of unemployed.  School officials estimate that in my county alone, budget cuts could result in termination of more than 100 teachers.  This would severely reduce funding for programs and services designed to assist at-risk students and would limit the number of textbooks the district would purchase.  If textbooks are limited this would prevent our children from being able to bring them home at night, virtually eliminating parents being able to help with homework.  Fewer teachers would mean increased class size which would prevent students from getting the individualized attention they deserve.  According the U.S. Dept of Education publication, Reducing Class Size, What Do We Know?,  class size reduction in the early grades leads to higher student achievement.  On being assigned to smaller classes, teachers report that the classroom atmosphere is better, that students can receive more individualized attention, and that the teachers have more flexibility to use different instructional approaches and assignments.  Larger classroom sizes would likely result in lower levels of student achievement.

As a parent of a child in the public school system, I am very concerned about the proposed budget cuts. I am a parent, not a politician, but why not raise taxes on cigarettes and divert the funds to Education?  According to the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, North Carolina has one of the lowest cigarette tax rates and currently ranks 48th nationwide (May 28, 2009 data). While North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue has proposed a tax increase of $1.oo per pack for cigarettes (raising the current tax of 35 cents per pack to $1.35), I do not think that is enough. Other states have increased their taxes even more. According to the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids which tracks this data, 13 states (including DC) have cigarette tax rates of $2.00 per pack or higher and one state (Rhode Island) has a cigarette tax rate of $3.00 per pack or higher.  According to a report from the North Carolina Alliance for Health, raising North Carolina’s cigarette tax by $1.00 will generate an additional $329 million in new revenue in the first year.  Raising it more than $1.oo would logically make our state even more money.  If this money was earmarked for Education, our public schools might not be adversely affected by state budget cuts.  Not only would we save money, we would save lives.

Whether you live in North Carolina or another state facing budget cuts, I urge you to contact your Governor and State legislators to voice your opinion that Education should be protected as much as possible. It’s the least we can do for our children who are our country’s future.
