Top 10 Reasons I am Excited to Stay Home with My Family this Coming Weekend

top10Okay I will admit it.  I have been a little bummed out because it seems like everyone and their sister is attending BlogHer (a blogging convention) in Chicago which started today.  Then a blog post from my friend Lisa at Mom of 2 Boys, Wife of 1, made me realize that I am not the only one not going to BlogHer and that instead of feeling bummed, I should be excited to have time with my family this weekend.  Lisa announced on her blog a contest sponsored by Cozi who is giving away $100 to 15 bloggers not going to BlogHer.  To enter, we each have to post the Top 10 reasons we are excited to stay home with our families this weekend.  The 15 bloggers with the most comments on Monday, July 27th will each win 100 big ones.  SO PLEASE LEAVE ME A COMMENT

Since I hope that I am one of the lucky 15, if you leave a comment here, you can enter either one of my current giveaways an extra 15 times.  Need a SlimPerfect swimsuit or Mitchel Musso’s CD? Comment here and then leave 15 separate comments on one or both of those posts.  Here is my list (in no particular order):

1.  I get to spend some quality time with The Little Write Gal who just got home from “Camp Grandma” today.

2.  I will save lots of money since I didn’t have to buy any new clothes for BlogHer.

3.  If I was at BlogHer I would miss seeing my college friends Caroline and Mandy who I am visiting with tomorrow.

4.  I get to go to church with my family on Sunday.

5.  The Little Write Gal and I will be attending a birthday party on Saturday for the prettiest and sweetest 3 year old, Miss Ava Elizabeth.

6.  I would miss The Little Write Gal and Ashes terribly.

7.  I need to stay home because next weekend I am going to be out of town with some girls at church for a Beth Moore conference.

8.  I would miss my Sunday afternoon nap with The Little Write Gal.

9.  I have a hard time sleeping when I am not in my own bed.

10.  I would miss reading all of the wonderful comments from my readers if I was sitting in a conference all day.

Thank you so much for leaving me a comment. So what will you be doing this weekend?

Mommy Guilt

JuneCleaverThis week my friend Trisha from Sweet ‘N Sassy Girls wrote a fantastic post entitled, “Moms, Why Do We Feel Guilty.”  She talked very eloquently about how Moms feel guilty when they want to take some time away from their kids for a little “me” time.  This is from her post:

My question is, why do we feel so guilty about having some time to ourselves? We come back refreshed and a better mom/wife/person. We are more relaxed after, and happier. What’s that saying? When momma ain’t happy, ain’t no one happy?

I definitely agree that as Moms we carry a sense of  guilt around if we want to spend some time by ourselves or with friends, without our kids.  And I think that is unfortunate.  Everyone deserves some time to recharge their batteries. It will make you a better Mom and a better person.

Another area where I think we experience “Mommy Guilt” is with housework.  I will admit that I am not the best housekeeper in the world and I often feel guilty because I am not June Cleaver material.  If I fix the Little Write Gal pizza rolls instead of a meat and three vegetables for supper I feel guilty.  I feel guilty when the house is a mess and she wants me to stop cleaning to watch a movie with her.  Does it really matter in the long run if there are toys in your living room, dishes in the sink, or if your child’s room is a mess?  No it doesn’t.  Because one day when our children are gone and are away at college or living on their own I am sure I would give anything to see a little toy scattered on my floor.

Take a few hours away from your kids to refresh yourself and don’t feel guilty about it.  Don’t worry about the dishes in the sink when your child asks you to play with them. Say goodbye to Mommy Guilt.

Like Yard Sales?

GarageSaleSummer is the perfect time to have a garage or yard sale and to make some extra money for your family vacation.  The frustrating thing about hosting a garage sale is the advertising which can be difficult and costly. You either spend countless hours posting signs all over town or paying for an expensive advertisement in your local newspaper.  The next time you have a yard sale you can advertise it for less by using Garage Sales Tracker, an online advertising company which allows sellers to advertise their event and buyers to find sales in their area.  The costs of using Garage Sales Tracker are definitely cheaper than a newspaper and for a limited time they are offering free advertising.  There is no limit to the amount of words you can use in your yard sale description and you can even add images to your listing which will showcase some of your great items.  And if you need some Yard Sale Tips check out their blog for some ideas on how to have a successful sale.

freelistingsIf you like to go to garage sales, you can use the site’s free Garage Sale Locator to find local sales in your area.  You can easily search by distance, city, date, and even by items listed for sale.  Also you do not have spend time copying and pasting the seller’s address into Mapquest because you can easily do this from the Garage Sales Tracker Web site.

I have been saying for the last five years that we need to have a yard sale but have not wanted to pay the cost of a newspaper ad.  Since Garage Sales Tracker is offering free advertising I think I am going to give it a try when we finally get around to hosting a sale.

Celebrate Earth Day – Product Spotlight

In celebration of Earth Day I thought I would spotlight a few new “green” products.

whitecloudWhite Cloud Green Earth Paper Products- White Cloud has developed toilet paper and paper towels made from 100% recycled fibers.  At first I have to admit I was skeptical about these products.  After all, how soft could “recycled” toilet paper be?  I have to say that I was surprised at the softness and I cannot even tell the difference from regular toilet paper. The White Cloud Green Earth paper towels were very sturdy and absorbent. I like how they come in perforated sheets so you can use as little or as much as you need.  I would definitely purchase both of these products in the future. I think if all consumers were conscious about the impact paper has on our planet we could seriously save some trees by using recycled paper products like White Cloud. Wal-Mart will begin carrying the Green Earth White Cloud products in their stores beginning May 1st.  You can learn more about Wal-Mart’s Save and Live Green campaign by visiting their Web site.

The Fragrance Collection, Soy Candles by GladeGlade has introduced a new line of soy candles in yummy scents such as McIntosh Apple and Orange Vanilla.  These candles are made with more than 90% natural ingredients. If you are a fan of Orange Dreamsicles or Orange Julius then I highly recommend the Orange Vanilla scent.  It smells so good I could just eat it!  Here is an online coupon which will allow you to save $4.00 on your purchase.  These candles are also available at Wal-Mart.  You can purchase any of the scents in The Fragrance Collection as reed diffusers which would be a great alternative to burning a candle.

Happy Earth Day!

Office Max and Peter Walsh team up to make you organized

peterofficemaxLast week I had the wonderful opportunity to participate in a Webcast with Office Max and Clean Sweep’s Peter Walsh.  Peter has just launched a new line of office organization products at Office Max.  I was fortunate enough to receive samples of these products and I am impressed.  They are very durable and functional. Now you won’t see pictures on my blog of my messy office, but receiving them did inspire me to do some Spring cleaning.  Check out some of the items from Peter’s new [IN] Place System.

During the Web cast Peter shared some helpful tips that I thought I would pass along to my Write Gal readers:

  • Keep a journal or notebook to organize post-its, notes, to do lists, etc.  This will eliminate keeping scraps of  paper everywhere.  I am so guilty of this and I always have scraps of all over the place: in my car, my calendar, my purse, the home office.  I LOVE this idea and I have been trying it for a few days now.
  • Clear your clutter before you start organizing; don’t rush out and buy new organizational products first.  I think that clutter removal is definitely the first step to what Peter calls “Turning Your Office Into Office Heaven.”  Well apparently he hasn’t seen my office.  He wouldn’t be calling it heavenly. I am seeing some red LOL.  Now when the clutter is gone Peter’s products are a definite must have.  They are clear in color which will match any office decor.
  • Even children can learn to be organized. Peter mentioned the importance of teaching children to put everything in its place and to put their school work away immediately in a folder.  Make sure you clean it out periodically and toss items you no longer need.  I bet I still have some papers from when The Little Write Gal was in daycare around here somewhere.
  • Organization is a battle that has to be won.  This is definitely a true statement at my house.  Currently my office is a pit.  My dog is even scared to enter.

Office Clutter – 10; Write Gal – 0.

Size Shouldn’t Matter: Meghan McCain Fights Weight Critics

meganmccainI am absolutely SICK and tired of women being criticized for their weight.  It is all over the news media - television, radio, magazines, and even on Twitter.  So kudos to those women who stick up for the rest of us, like Meghan McCain, the daughter of Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain.  She was recently attacked on the radio by conservative commentator Laura Ingraham who said McCain was “just another Valley Girl gone awry.” She then mocked McCain in a faux Valley Girl voice, saying that she didn’t get a “role in the Real World” because “they don’t like plus-sized models.” McCain responded on Twitter stating: “To all the curvy girls out there, don’t let anyone make you feel bad about your body. I love my curves and you should love yours too.”  You go girl!

On Monday, McCain appeared on ABC’s The View and further discussed this issue. ”Everyone from Tyra Banks to Oprah to Hillary Clinton to my mother — why are we so obsessed with weight?,” she said.  And it’s not like McCain has a weight problem; she is a size 8. During her Dad’s Presidential campaign she was up to a size 10 (the same size as me) and on the campaign trail someone handed her a card from a plastic surgeon and suggested she get liposuction.  I guess according to Hollywood if you are a size 8/10 you are considered fat and in need of lipo.  How very unfortunate, especially because the average American woman is said to be a size 12/14.  If you missed McCain’s appearance on The View, you can watch it here:

It is scary that size is such an issue in our society where unfortunately millions are suffering from eating disorders, which can cause severe health issues including death.  It is estimated that 9 million Americans currently have an eating disorder. If Hollywood would stop making weight such an issue, this number would be drastically less.  According to a report from the National Eating Disorders Coalition, 40% of 9-year-old girls have dieted.  NINE YEAR OLDS shouldn’t even know what the word diet is.  As a mother of an 8-year-old daughter, this terrifies me. This week one of the Little Write Gal’s spelling words was “overweight.”  I am appalled that this word is even discussed in the schools.  Why should a third grader need to know how to spell overweight?  I shudder to think what our society is going to be like when our children are adults.  Thankfully there are women out there in front of the media like McCain who can raise awareness that size does not matter. I am hoping that by the time our daughters are grown that it won’t.
